broken tab on oven floor

Eric the Shipper forgot to leave me my oven floor when he delivered my Beauty. He shipped it via DHL and the tab toward the front is now broken off. It still stands where it is supposed to but looks weird and unstable.

Does anyone know about fixing this? Is welding and option on a support part?
Does anyone have a replacement if I can't fix it (C). I m trying to remain positive but I am bummed - 53 years it was intact!

Good morning Phoebe...the broken cast iron can be repaired! There are several methods all if which need to be done by a pro at a good tool+die, custom machining, or fabrication shop. The methods you want to inquire about are:
1) Brazing...this will be the weakest of the 3 methods but the cheapest. I'm not totally sure this wil work for this application. (Sam might know.)
2) siver soldering...stronger and a just a little more expensive than brazing. And relatively easy to do.
3) nickel nicad weld...this will be the stronest and most expensive. Make sure the person who does this kind of welding is very fimiliar with what they're doing. Not just blowing smoke! It takes a little more preperation and care to have it come out right.

Call around your area to some of the local machine shops in the yellow pages or goggle it local. Ask if they can do the last 2 (silver solder, nickel nicad) and then take the parts down to them and see what kind of feel you get from who you talk with. Be carefull about anyone telling you they can do the nickel nicad welding. It's somewhat of a specialty. Aircraft and Navel subcontractor shops do most of this kind of welding. Make sure you get a quote before you say "Go" Good luck...Pete

I'll try to get time to check into it on Monday. I go to school at a Tech college that offers welding - I can ask one of the instructors about the nickle nicad. (Although those welder types are a fearsome crowd).
Eric thinks he insured the package for $100.00 but I have had dismal luck getting money out of these deals in the past - any thoughts on this?

Phoebe, sorry to hear about your oven floor. That's definitely a bummer.

Oven floors come up on e-Bay periodically. There's very little market for them, so they tend to go for a song. I personally junked 3 of them since, like I said, there's very little market for them. If you can use yours until one comes up for sale, that's the route I would take.

I agree - the price to get it fixed is proably more than getting a replacement.

The darn thing is so heavy I have to wonder what the shipping cost is! Sure made me think twice about the idea of sending it to Gigi's!

If you watch eBay long enough, you may find one that's not too far from your home...

I am going to try Gigi - see if she has one already porcelained. I guess she is not open on Saturday - no answer earlier.

I get the feeling from Craigslist and ebay that gas really never came to North Carolina - or not in a big way...

Surely someone has an oven floor from a parts stove they could sell me? (C)
